Shaman Battle Themes & Weapon Proficiency: Here are some quick thoughts on Shaman Battle Themes, as they relate to weapon proficiencies.
Simple Weapons – Shaman’s are proficient with simple weapons. Therefore, the standard battle Shaman will focus on fighting with simple weapons. Optimally, this means that you will be fighting with a Morningstar (1d8 piercing and bludgeoning damage) or Longspear (piercing/reach). You will likely also need armor spikes for close range fighting if you are using a Longspear.
Racial Weapons – Of course, one way to gain proficiency with a weapon is to pick a race that is proficient with a racial weapon you like. For instance, Half-Orc are proficient with Greataxes and Falchions. Also, Elves are proficient with Longbows. Of course the negative is that you can’t be a human, losing the extra feat. This is a real bummer for feat intensive fighter builds like archery, two-weapon fighting, etc. You should stick to fundamental fighting builds – like a power attacker.
Human (Heirloom Weapon) – For the most optimal feat intensive fighting builds, you need to a Human using an Heirloom Weapon. Make sure you get Mending and Make Whole as spells.
Multicasting – Many people hate multicasting full casters. However, this is another way to get proficiencies and possible extra feats for your Shaman Battle builds. Further, racial weapon familiarity allows for racial exotic weapons to be treated as martial weapons by the appropriate race. This means, for example, that an Elven Curve Blade can be used by an Elf Shaman that has dipped one level into fighter. This is because fighters are proficient with all martial weapons and Elves treat the Elven Curve Blades (an elven exotic weapon) as martial weapons.
